RETINOL ALTERNATIVES
Many of you know I’m a big fan of Retinol, but sometimes it isn’t enough—Or, it’s too much!
Here are some alternatives:
⭐️ USING RETINOL ALREADY BUT WANT MORE RESULTS?
- Check the label and go up to 1% Retinol.
- If you’re already on 1%, step up to Retinaldehyde, a type of retinoid ingredient that’s MORE POTENT than Retinol, but not as strong as Rx Retinoids.
- In my office, I carry AVENE RETRINAL, which I recommend to my patients who want a stronger retinol alternative but may be too sensitive for Rx-strength. Some patients also alternate this with their Rx strength cream (or my Fade Cream Rx, which contains Rx retinoids).
⭐️ TOO SENSITIVE FOR RETINOL?
- Try products containing an ingredient called BAKUCHIOL, such as ACURE BAKUCHIOL SERUM
- Some people call it “PLANT RETINOL” though it’s not technically a Retinol.
- There are studies showing it may work as well as some formulations of Retinol when it comes to fine lines
- It’s less likely to irritate dry/sensitive skin, and won’t make you sun-sensitive.
⭐️ READY FOR RX-STRENGTH?
- Ask your Dermatologist about TRETINOIN.
- I’ve been using this since I was 23, when my Harvard Medical School professor told me to start using it. He was one of the original retinoid researchers. He said “we know it works for acne, but we think it also helps fine lines, Melasma, & sun damage.” Now 30 years later, we know he was right!
- I use Tretinoin 2-3 times a week including around my eyes. I have eczema so I have to take breaks occasionally, but it’s helped keep my large pores, fine lines, & sun spots under control. It’s very potent so many patients cannot use it every night, and I give specific instructions on how to use it – subject of an upcoming post! It can also cause sensitivity, so be sure to use SPF when using any retinoid. But it’s very effective if used correctly!
